Troubleshooting: Why is my IP weird?
Sometimes, you may find an IP address that doesn’t look like 192.168.x.x. Here is what that means:
- If your IP is 169.254.x.x: This is an APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) error. It means your device is physically connected to the router (or via Wi-Fi), but the router is unable to assign an IP address.
- Fix: Restart your router and your computer.
- If your IP is composed of letters and numbers (IPv6): You are looking at an IPv6 address (e.g., fe80::1…).
- Fix: Look specifically for the IPv4 Default Gateway, which is formatted as four numbers separated by dots (e.g.,
192.168.1.1).
